We love our town! West Chester, Pennsylvania (or, affectionately known to the
locals as the “Dub C”), is a vibrant community of people – a wonderful place to eat, live,
work and play. Emphasis though, for this moment, on eat – something we really love to
do! The West Chester restaurant scene is bustling with a variety of great places to get
your grub on, with more popping up all the time. We want to begin sharing some of our
favorites around town with you each month, and hope that you have a chance to check
them out for yourselves!

This month, we are highlighting Bar Avalon (116 East Gay Street, West Chester)
– a great dinner spot right in the heart of downtown West Chester. Chef John, the
owner and chef here, has earned a “very good” rating from Philadelphia Inquirer’s Craig
LaBan – and we can see why! Bar Avalon’s modern bistro menu gives us all the
feels…..handmade pastas, gourmet brick oven pizzas, slow braised meats, and creative
antipasti boards, just to name a few (they had us at pasta). Their appetizer list – which
they call “snacks for the table” – is quite extensive and a great way to try a bunch of
small plates (Crispy Calamari with Lemon Caper Remoulade – just yes)!

When it gets down to decision time – we know, it is so hard to commit – but we have a solution!
Some of their pastas are able to be done as an appetizer, and therefore, is the perfect
way to try a few “larger” dishes at once. Our suggestion – get the Lamb Bolognese with
ricotta; pappardelle as an appetizer to share (if you’re into that kind of thing – sharing,
that is). It comes as a decent size bowl of house made pappardelle, nicely al dente to
the bite, topped with a bountiful portion of Bolognese and a dollop of fresh ricotta to top
it off. The flavor mingling will transport you right back to your Italian grandmother’s
kitchen! Then, go for the Grilled Hanger Steak with sautéed wild mushrooms, fried
cauliflower, and spicy tahini sauce as your entrée. Besides a perfectly cooked steak,
the lightly fried cauliflower and zingy sauce are such a unique complement – meddling a
bit in Middle Eastern flavors, and it works! Are you hungry yet?

Their cozy neighborhood restaurant vibe is perfect for meeting a group of friends,
or a date night, especially on the weekends when they feature live music. It’s also a
great place to enjoy a drink – their handcrafted specialty cocktail menu entices one to
branch out with fun sounding libations like “Lil Miss JBL” (Pama, Elderflower, and
prosecco) and “Figgy Smalls” (fig; vanilla infused vodka, Tuaca, Earl Grey tea, figs) .
Have a larger group or need a place to host a party? Bar Avalon shines here too! They
recently hosted West Chester Design/Build’s company Christmas dinner, and we
enjoyed one of their beautiful private rooms for the event. Chef John took time to work
with us to create a customized menu, and made sure there were plenty of options
available for anyone with allergies or food restrictions. The night of the event, we
enjoyed dedicated service to our party and, of course, plenty of delicious food!

Check out Bar Avalon on their website (www.avalonrestaurant.net) to read more
about them, view their full menu, and to find out about their specials and upcoming
events. Happy Eating!
